JET Program

Jobs Education and Training (JET) is a program of Michigan WORKS! JET helps families get off of welfare. Local agencies work together to remove barriers and connect Michigan families with the kinds of jobs, education and training that lead to self-sufficiency.

The Kalamazoo Deacons Conference partners with JET as a site where participants may receive practical work experience. Supervised by Deacons Conference staff, JET participants gain experience that can be translated into marketable skills. Through assisting guests in our clothing department, organization and customer service skills are learned. In our warehouse area, participants learn organization, slotting and the importance of presenting themselves in a professional manner to the public. Some may also be trained in office skills including reception, answering phones, data entry and operating office equipment. All participants are required to maintain a work schedule, learn appropriate work attire and work in a supervised situation.

The Kalamazoo Deacons Conference is a faith based and faith guided organization doing the Lord’s work through this ministry. Although we would take great joy in sharing our beliefs and encouraging those who have not found the Lord, we do not expect trainees placed here by the state to participate in any of our religious practices or observances nor to adhere to our beliefs, unless they so desire of their own will. KDC does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, age, national origin, marital status, handicap or religious preference in regards to its work site training programs or to the people we serve.
